Building a list is essential to internet marketing success. Direct mail is, across the entire marketing spectrum, the most effective form of advertising known to man. Still, few people see the value in list building in the beginning, and even fewer know how to build a list that truly grasps their potential customers. How does one come upon this mystical technique and utilize it for profit and promotion?
List building is easier than you think. The concept is simple: find people interested in your target market and let them know they can get free information on products, services, what have you. However, the way in which you inform people about your list is critical to successful list building. You never want to spam anyone, or send out an anonymous email that your potential customers have not opted into. So what are the secret techniques to building the most successful internet marketing list in history?
Incentives, Copy, and Exposure
Incentives skyrocket your list building potential. By offering a free product in exchange for subscription, you give people the chance to see the quality in your list and you build up your subscribers at the same time. Incentives can be anything from coupons to ebooks to downloadable scripts, and in the age of outsourcing, a great incentive can cost anywhere from $10-$50.
What kind of incentive should it be? First of all, you should strive to deliver a product that is targeted towards your niche. Second, you should make it a solution to a common problem. “How to unclog a sink” for the do-it-yourself market would probably attract a lot of attention. In contrast, “The Super Affiliate Report” might attract those who are into affiliate marketing. Plan your product to suit the needs of your customers.
Once you have your incentive, you’ll need award winning copy. While the product might sell itself to a few people, your sales page is what will really convert visitors into subscribers. Whether you write copy for forum threads, blog posts, or a full-fledged mini-site, you’ll need persuasive and compelling copy that makes readers jump at the opportunity to get your product and onto your subscriber list.
You can get this award-winning copy a few ways. First, you can write it yourself. However, if you’re not a skilled writer, you can also ask a friend or business partner to write something up for you in their spare time (make sure to offer something in return!). The final solution is simply to hire a copywriter. If you do hire someone, make sure you get examples of previous sales pages, and conversion rates. The goal is to get copy that sells.
Now let’s say you have your incentive and your fantastic copy. How do you get people to actually download your product and subscribe to your announcements? First, you can setup a min-site and drive traffic to it via SEO and social media attention. Second, you can join up forums and participate in the community, using your signature, avatar, and threads in the right categories to promote your list and your incentive. Thirdly, you can setup a blog related to your topic, and use interesting posts and contests to drive in subscribers. There are other endless possibilities, but you’ll find that these three are the most effective methods.

I think developing an incentive is the most important part of beginning email marketing, alongside the pitch. The right incentive can get someone to do anything. Think about Klondike bars.
Yes agreed, incentives can really get people to sign up!.
I think the incentive is probably one of the most important aspects of list building. Without a great reason to sign up, many people will pass you by. Consider Klondike bars.
Yes agreed, incentives can really get people to sign up!
Cool post Farrhad
One question though… what’s the best software to build lists? I mean, I really want to get one, but I was wondering if there are any that are particularly cheap or even free?

As for free there are a few alternatives. But I recommend Awber, really easy to use but yes it is compartitively expensive.
What are the free ones that you would recommend?

Have a look at FreeLists.org, I have not used it but it looks good.
@Simon
IMO spending few bugs on Aweber worth it.. The kind of quality you will get is worth every single penny…

I’ve used mailchimp and it works really well if you have <100 subscribers. Afterwards it becomes paid. They have some extremely nice templates and subscribe options.
Cool, thanks for the suggestion Corey!

Dear Farrhad,
The very first thing that I would love to tell you in my very first comment on this blog is – ‘You blog awesome’.
As far as email marketing list building is concerned, I think it would be good to provide incentives in the form of e-books or e-courses(like you do) and I have seen them converting at a great ratio.
It was pleasure reading here and now I am pointing my browser to letssermo.com for seeing what you have for us there.
Cheers!
To your success,
Aditya
Thanks a lot for the awesome comment Aditya

The best incentive is a free report. Not only does it work best in getting opt-ins, it can be distributed virally as well.

I’ve never tried creating a report. What exactly does that entail?
Basically something like, “How I made $10000 in 5 days” kind of stuff.
Building a list is very important but that depends on what type you’re planning for. Quantity or Quality show down.

There are some people who practice email list exchanges (well, not literally). What they do is ask someone with an email list to promote his/her product in exchange for promoting theirs. In that way, you build up on your list when people opt-in. Very powerful method and works for many people.
Richael | Domain Marvelous´s last blog ..Domain Registration Length – Does it Matter?
Yes, I have seen many big IM-ers do this.
You are right it really helps.
Ops! Sorry for the double comment. I wanted to emphasize one thing. Anyone planning to do emails campaigns should go for the paid services, either Aweber (best) or Getresponse. Free email autoresponders have limitations and in some cases, the email list does not belong to you. If you plan to go away from these free services, sometimes you have to fore go your list.
Richael | Domain Marvelous´s last blog ..Domain Registration Length – Does it Matter?
Yes, you are ABSOLUTELY right always go with paid services.
I use Awber it rocks.
In regards to making a review copy their is another option offer you can do. HP has a service called MagCloud. It basically allows you to create your own magazines that they will print and send to whomever for a small fee, 20 cents a page.

Yes, that is a nice option.
I am checking MagCloud out now.

An incentive is a must. I’d also recommend keeping with a reasonable promotion to good content ratio, something like 3:7.
Lastly, don’t use free lists because most of them suck.
